Warehouse management or what chaos automation leads to

The two-day workshop on Warehouse Management in the Pharmaceutical and Food Industries took place in Minsk on 14th-15th November. It was conducted by Evgenia Duginova, an expert from Consulting for Retail, with more than 10 years of experience in managing warehouse complexes.

The central theme of the seminar was the harmonization of modern warehouse management techniques with GMP, GDP and ISO 22000 standards for the CIS countries. The seminar participants - warehouse managers of the farms, food and cosmetics manufacturing companies - highly appreciated theoretical material and practical tasks, lively discussion and development of solutions for individual cases.

During the seminar, each participant evaluated his warehouse and received management methodology in terms of its development level, based on legislative requirements. As it turned out during the training, there is no universal solution. What works in one warehouse paralyzes the work of another warehouse. At the seminar, the participants studied and independently worked on practical tasks, developed methods which they can use to achieve effective warehouse management. The next logical step after the systematization of processes is the implementation of WMS.

“To optimize the operation of the warehouse and implement process automation, it is necessary to assess the level of its readiness. After that, it is necessary to make assessment and create a plan to improve the operation of the warehouse. To achieve transparency of the warehouse work, it is important to have clear description and definition of responsible people for certain processes. It is also important to form streamlined workflow, to create assessment of material flows and understand the number of required personnel. Only after that, we can start preparations for the implementation of automated warehouse management systems. You must always remember that automation of chaos leads to automated chaos,” - shared Eugene with the participants.
